The Start Of Your Career Path: Training
Better Training...Better Wages...Better Working Conditions

One reason that contractors are so enthusiastic about their union craftsman is the training they receive at the start of their careers. The Washington Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, NECA, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, IBEW, Local 26 operate their own joint Apprenticeship and Training Schools in Washington, DC, Manassas, VA, and Roanoke, VA.

With state-of-the-art equipment and skilled instructors, apprentices receive rigorous training lasting five years. They complete courses in such subjects as motor controls, teledata and telecommunications, electronics and computer control devices. The school also offers safety courses to all students, from apprentices to management personnel.

In a continuing education program, journeyman are able to upgrade their skills in the national electrical code, fiber optics, programmable and motor controls and fire alarms so they can keep pace with the ever-changing technology of the electrical profession.

Because the training is of such high quality, students receive forty-seven college credit hours through the American Council on Education.

A recent article in NEWSWEEK magazine was headlined:
IT'S HIP TO BE UNION

One reason is the improvement in the salaries of union electricians compared to what they earned before joining IBEW. One member of Local 26 said, "It was kind of a secret getting a raise in a non-union company because you had to talk to the owner...it had to be hush-hush. If you couldn't get a raise that way, you had to threaten to quit.".

The union gets you more money and does the bargaining for you. And there's more, the medical benefits that can't be topped. They cover 80 percent of the costs for your medical, dental and vision needs, plus the costs of prescriptions and preventative medicine, with lifetime benefits up to $1 million. Disability benefits are included, and so is life insurance, with no extra charge for dependents.
