SAMPLE LETTER TO YOUR LEGISLATOR:

Dear _________________________:

I am a constituent of yours, and I am writing to ask for your help. It has come to my attention that the Governor is attempting to do away with Maryland’s state prevailing wage law. This is not good for my family, my community, the state of Maryland, or me.

The loss of our state’s prevailing wage laws will hurt those of us who pay the most to support our state, people like me. The only people to benefit will be large business owners that will drive down the wages of construction workers like me. How will that help our state when I pay less in taxes because I earn so much less? You don’t have to be a math wizard to see that over half of our state’s revenue comes from individual citizens like me. Corporations in Maryland have a better tax deal here than anywhere in the country including Delaware. How will I be able to support my family and community? What happened to promoting family values? How will legitimate, responsible contractors be able to offer any benefits to their employees? They won’t be able to compete with contractors that see workers not as people, but only as a business expense.

To propose legislation like this undermines the economic foundation of our state and shows no respect for our state, my community, my family or me. The proposed legislation shows a lack of vision and understanding of how we, as Marylanders, have achieved success in the past, present and, with your help, will continue to succeed in the future.

Your immediate active support to turn back the Governor’s assault on prevailing wage is urgently needed. This is a battle that can be won for the citizens of Maryland, but your help is needed.

Thank you.
